What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that most often affects the face. Rosacea worsens with time if left untreated. According to the America Academy of Dermatology, around 14 million Americans struggle with rosacea.

The 4 different types of rosacea are:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Redness, flushing, visible blood vessels.
  2. Papulopustular rosacea: Redness, swelling, and acne-like breakouts.
  3. Phymatous rosacea: Skin thickens and has a bumpy texture.
  4. Ocular rosacea: Eyes red and irritated, eyelids can be swollen, and person may have what looks like a sty.

What causes rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors along with abnormalities in the blood vessels. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene.

Other possible triggers of rosacea include:

  • Temperature extremes
  • Sunlight or wind exposure
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Hot / spicy food or beverages
  • Cosmetics
  • Exercise
  • Emotional stress
  • Medications that dilate the blood vessels, such as some blood pressure medications
  • Anyone can develop rosacea, but it is more common in middle aged women with fair skin. Rosacea is not contagious.

How can I treat rosacea?

Rosacea can be treated with the use of prescription topicals, orals and procedures available at our offices. Common therapy may include antibiotics, topical medications and Rhofade (for facial redness). VBeam Laser or Aerolase Laser may also be used to help treat the redness, papules and inflammation associated with this chronic condition.
