Dermatitis Chicago

What is Dermatitis?

While there are several types of dermatitis, it is a general term that describes inflammation of the skin. This inflammation is usually accompanied by an itchy rash and swollen, reddened skin. It may even blister or become crusted or flake off. Dermatitis is a very common skin condition, and it is not contagious. The most common types of dermatitis include Atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis.

What causes Dermatitis?

Contact with any of a number of substances, such as poison ivy, soaps and jewelry with certain materials in it can cause dermatitis. Examples of dermatitis include atopic dermatitis (eczema), dandruff, and rashes. A number of health conditions, allergies, genetic factors and irritants can cause different types of dermatitis.

How can I treat Dermatitis?

If your dermatitis begins to become uncomfortable, painful, infected, or it won’t go away, it is recommended to seek medical treatment. Doctors may perform patch testing if needed, to see if there is an allergy. A combination of self-care steps and medications can help you treat dermatitis.
